The Grade 1's stayed in Room 19 and we started talking about Roles and Responsibilities. We made a chart of all the different roles we play and talked about how our roles can change depending on where we are. We then talked about some of the responsibilities we have for different roles.
Today the Grade 2's went to either Mr. Anderson or Mrs. Sutton for science. They kicked off their unit on air and water. There was lots of excitement and smiles when they returned! This week we have been talking about writing! We brainstormed a list of different things we can write about if we get stuck. We also made a heart map of things that are important to us. We read the book "It Looked Like Spilt Milk" and turned a squiggle into something different which we wrote about. Just a friendly reminder that we have our field trip to the Joseph Schneider Haus on Friday. If you haven't sent in your permission form, please do so ASAP. I will be sending home a reminder letter later in the week.
Today we read the book "Making a Splash" and talked about growth and fixed mindsets. If you have a growth mindset you try challenging things and don't give up when something is difficult. If you have a fixed mindset you avoid challenges and believe that you can't learn something new. We watched the following video and talked about if the ducklings have a growth or fixed mindset. Fishing for Ten (played like Go Fish)Two to Four players
Materials: one deck of cards with the face cards removed Play this game similar to Go Fish but instead of finding cards of the same number and colour, students pair numerals that add to ten (e.g., 7 and 3, 4 and 6, 2 and 8…) Deal 7 cards to each player. Set the remaining cards face down in a pile in the centre of the group. Students take turns asking each other for cards that will allow them to make ten. When they get a pair of numbers that equal ten, they set their cards down for others to see and check. Play continues until the all the cards are all paired. Students may wish to use a face card to represent zero that will allow them to make 10 + 0. This morning the students arrived to this....... After letting it dry it's wings for a few hours we went outside and let our monarch go and start the long migration to Mexico.
This week we talked about three parts of our brain: the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. The prefrontal cortex helps you make good decisions, the amygdala acts like a security guard to keep you safe, and the hippocampus stores your memories. When we get stressed out or angry, information swirls around our head like glitter in a jar. When we calm down we are able to make a good decision. We worked on breathing as a way to calm our bodies. This week we have been building our reading stamina. Each day we find a comfy spot and try to read for a little bit longer than the day before. Room 19 sure does love to read :)
